Mermaid Queen is a print of Rovandio’s very first painting — a stunning debut of his minimalistic style. His brushstrokes carry a graceful flow and movement, paired with a natural sense of composition. Unlike my late Friesian horse, Douwe, whose energetic style was all vertical strokes and playful splatters, Rovandio paints with intention, favoring gentle curves and sideways lines. It’s fascinating how each horse’s artistic voice mirrors their personality — Rovandio’s work is calm, wise, and focused, while Douwe’s was bold, goofy, and larger-than-life.
👉🏼 FRAME NOT INCLUDED 👈🏼
The name Mermaid Queen came from a fan on Instagram, and it couldn’t be more fitting. The piece’s sweeping shapes and vibrant colors evoke the beauty and mystery of the sea. As a child, I was captivated by The Little Mermaid and spent summers in Greenville, ME, pretending to be a mermaid in the cool waters of Moosehead Lake — when I wasn’t pretending to be a horse, of course.
If someone had told that little girl she would one day paint with horses, she would have been speechless. Much of what I do now is to honor her — to create things that would amaze her and prove that dreams are worth chasing, no matter the obstacles. My hope is that Mermaid Queen and Rovandio’s art inspire you to embrace more imagination, wonder, and magic in your own life.
