“Dance of Tok” will always hold a special place in my heart. My passion as an artist is to capture the essence of the horse with as few lines as possible — to say more by painting less. This piece embodies that goal. It’s simple, yet full of power and intention, just like the quiet strength we find when life is focused on what truly matters: the people, horses, and passions we love. ❤
If you feel drawn to this painting, I imagine you too find magic in life’s simplest moments — the smell of your horse’s coat, the rhythm of his breath, the sound of him happily munching hay, or that perfect, effortless canter transition. These are the small, fleeting details that I like to call the nectar of life — reminders to pause, to feel, and to be present.
This painting was inspired by Tok, a magnificent 17-hand Andalusian gelding owned by my dear friend, Marsha Sapp. During my time at Southern Oaks, I had the joy of working with Tok, and I wanted to honor his strength, elegance, and gentle energy on canvas. We were blessed with a beautiful April day in 2017, when photographer Kimberly Chason joined us to capture the process. Rovandio was completely in flow that day — his calm, creative energy carried through each brushstroke.
Using a mix of brushes, acrylic paint, water, and my hands, I painted Tok’s form, dapples, and movement as I felt them — not just as I saw them. To finish the piece, Rovandio’s own hoofprint was painted on a piece of cloth and transferred to the canvas, a symbol of his spirit and our shared artistry.
“Dance of Tok” is more than a painting — it’s a meditation on simplicity, focus, and the joy found in connection.
