“Pure Imagination” is one of the most vibrant and joy-filled pieces Rovandio and I have ever created. With its bold shades of blue, turquoise accents, and a luminous white horse at the center, this painting feels like stepping into a dream. The title was inspired by the beloved song from the Willy Wonka soundtrack — the same song that played in the background of our viral TikTok video, capturing the magic of our creative process together. 💙
The name perfectly reflects the essence of my work. I strive to tap into the imagination of my inner child — that curious, playful place where art and wonder are born. Everyday life can sometimes feel heavy or repetitive, but creating art brings back the sparkle. To create is to make magic, and that sense of wonder is what keeps me going.
For this piece, I began by layering texture on the canvas and pressing mandala-like patterns into the background with stencils. On the first day, Rovandio and I painted the body of the horse, adding movement and energy through splatters and sweeping strokes. The next day, we built up color and contrast until the horse seemed to emerge from a swirl of imagination and light. Our sessions are short and full of joy — just 30 minutes of walk, trot, canter, flying changes, sidepass, rein-back, and piaffe — long enough for expression, but easy on Rovandio’s 20-year-old body. I always want him to enjoy painting and feel good afterward.
This piece is especially meaningful because it marks the first time Rovandio signed one of our paintings himself. The teal brushstrokes near his hoofprint were made with a brush he held in his mouth — a true collaboration. I first taught him to paint alongside my beloved horse Douwe in 2019. After Douwe passed in 2020, I missed that shared creative time deeply. It took patience and a new approach, but one day it finally clicked — Rovandio began to love it. Now, every brushstroke feels like both a continuation and a tribute to that legacy.
“Pure Imagination” reminds me that art, much like life with horses, is about trust, play, and the courage to dream.
